Converting Your Recipes To Cheap Recipes

There is no getting away from the fact that almost all of us have to tighten the proverbial belt as we face a world recession and the first place that usually gets hit is the grocery budget. You may feel you have already done all you can to cut down on your food spending but there are plenty of ways to turn your favorite recipes into cheap recipes AND you don’t have to sacrifice either the quality or the taste.

Replacing expensive ingredients with cheaper items is one obvious way to make your recipes into cheap recipes. Think about the cuts of meat you typically buy - are they the most expensive? Usually cheaper cuts work just as well when you’re incorporating them into any recipe. You might not like the T-bone steak offered at the larger stores but that doesn’t mean their stewing steak won’t be nice once you’ve added all your other ingredients.

Cutting down on the amount of the expensive ingredients you use in your cooking is another way to adjust your recipes to cheap recipes. Adding extra tomatoes and mushrooms to your bolognaise means less meat is needed. You could also increase the amount of spaghetti that you would normally do for the family. It’s surprising how no one notices what the portions are as long as the meal looks the same size as usual. You can do this with a host of other meals and it makes them into cheap recipes even though you are using the same ingredients, just different proportions.

Casseroles are always one of the first things we think of when considering cheap recipes. Usually these use very inexpensive ingredients such as pasta, rice, or noodles and a small amount of meat along with some vegetables. As with other recipes you might need to adjust the amounts of some ingredients. A good recipe for a chicken casserole calls for a creamy soup such as cream of mushroom to be added to rice and chicken. You can cut the amount of chicken down and add broccoli or peas to bulk it up and make it more filling. Most recipes are like this - cut down on the meat and add other ingredients and you have cheap recipes without sacrificing flavor.

You will find that your best cheap recipes are the ones you come up with yourself because only you know where you are spending your money in the grocery store and only you know what you and your family like to eat. If its meat that seems to be taking your entire budget then clearly you need to buy cheaper cuts or perhaps a different meat altogether, replace prime steaks for chicken legs etc. Also, you are aware of the vegetables that go down well in your household and buying smaller portions of meat and replacing with popular vegetables is the cornerstone of cheap recipes.
